WELCOME TO OUR APARTMENTS
42rvh is in the heart of the old town, or Bastide St Louis, the historic heart of the town of Carcassonne. The suites are located on the first floor of an hôtel particulier (grand French townhouse) and are a minutes walk from the Place Carnot – the buzzy central square. We discovered 42rvh back in 2006 and fell in love with it's soaring ceilings, old moulded plaster work and patterned parquet floors. After two years of renovations we opened the apartments up to visitors who were looking for an authentic and beautiful place to stay. Those who value history will adore it's wonderful 18th century features and those who like contemporary design will love the eclectic mix of old and new furnishings and decoration.
The Bastide town sits on the opposite bank of the River Aude from the medieval Cité and was founded in the C13th – it is known locally as the old town, not to be confused with the even older walled Cité which is an easy 10-15 minute walk away. The apartments are 1 minute from the Place Carnot, the central square filled with cafes and restaurants - perfect for people watching on a sunny day and also the home of the market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The house itself is of major historical importance and is shown on all the town plans and maps. The site originally housed a C14th Augustine convent and the building as it is today was built by a wealthy fabric merchant between 1735 and 1750. The exterior of the building and the magnificent stone entrance staircase with its ornate wrought iron balustrade are protected as a monuments historiques. Being a protected monument means we can't have air conditioning installed but we have fans and shutters to keep you cool in the summer.
Check-in / check-out
Check-in is from 16.00 and check-out before midday. However, these times are for guidance only and we will be as flexible as we can for those arriving early and those wanting to check out later. It all depends on the times of other clients arrival and departure.
No-one lives on site. It is therefore essential that a check-in time is agreed in advance so that someone can be at 42rvh at the correct time to meet you. On arrival you will be met by one of the team in Carcassonne, usually Chris.
In case of a change of plans, a problem or an unforeseen delay, you can contact him on
+33 783 662510 to re-arrange your confirmed check-in time.
Being in the very centre of town means there is no private parking available at 42rvh.
However, there is plenty of parking available nearby on the street and in the open air car park situated at the top of rue Victor Hugo, which is free overnight and a minimal cost during the day.
If you want something more secure, then there are secure underground car parks situated at Square Gambetta, Place du General de Gaulle & Square Andre Chenier.
FOOD & eating out
Each kitchen is stocked with complimentary tea, coffee, milk and sugar.
The apartments at 42rvh are ideally situated close to shops and boulangeries for those wishing to prepare breakfast themselves and to nearby cafes for those wanting to have breakfast prepared for them. The masters Apartment has an enormous fully fitted cooks kitchen with a range cooker and American double fridge freezer and the other two apartments have kitchenettes with fridges, small hobs and microwave ovens, perfect for preparing breakfasts or light snacks. You'll find a full guide on our favourite places to eat and drink inside each apartment.
If you have been reading some older reviews of 42rvh you will have come across references to breakfast, dinner and cooking classes. Sadly, these are no longer available and the apartments are now let on a self-catered basis only.
The apartments are self catering and we don't offer a daily turn down service. Daily cleaning, should you require it, is available on request at an extra charge. The apartments are all cleaned and the linen is changed before you arrive. If you are staying for a week, your bedlinen and towels will be changed for you on day four of your stay.
In each apartment you will find a guide to our recommendations of what to do, where to eat, drink and shop, what to see in town and further afield and local essentials
