About Carcassonne

Carcassonne is steeped in history.  The most dramatic embodiment of this is the medieval Cité, built on the site of a former Roman fortification, with it’s narrow cobbled streets and fantasy towers and it’s air of mystery and drama linked to the fate of the Cathars 800 years ago.

But there is more to Carcassonne than just the Cité. The current town is centred on the old Bastide (fortified) town built in the C13th and now the vibrant heart of the community with it’s cafes, bars, restaurants and shops.  The central Place Carnot holds the food and flower market 3 times a week as well as an array of free cultural events throughout the year and is the perfect place to stop and people watch over a coffee or a chilled bottle of rosé.

Just to the north of the Bastide is the harbour on the C17th Canal du Midi, a marvel of engineering and a haven of beauty and tranquillity whether explored on the water or on foot or cycle along the towpath.  Another enchanting stroll can be had along the banks of the River Aude with the Cité on one side, the town on the other and mountains in either direction north and south – walk off your lunch whilst taking it all in.
